Description

An Eastern amulet hidden in shifting light

A traditional symbol of protection, prosperity and safe journeys, captured in one pendant. A flash of colour against deep black immediately draws the eye.

Its dark lacquer seems to absorb the light. Turn it slightly and the lettering and symbols reflect a rainbow of green, blue, violet and gold, like an aurora across the night sky.

The front bears a traditional Taoist Shangui charm inscription; the reverse features the Bagua, the eight trigrams associated with balance in the universe. This finely made pendant draws on one of China’s most storied amulet traditions.

🧭 Natural lacquer and mother-of-pearl: traditional Chinese craftsmanship

1. Natural lacquer
Layer upon layer of plant-derived lacquer forms the base. Ink-black and mirror-bright, it gives the pendant a deep, composed finish and an enduring character.

2. Mother-of-pearl inlay
The shimmering lettering and symbols use the traditional Chinese craft of mother-of-pearl inlay. Artisans cut shell into very fine pieces or powder and set it into the lacquer.
The shell’s natural iridescence makes the inscriptions seem to come alive as the light changes, creating a mysterious, holographic shimmer.

☯️ Shangui charm: the thunder decree on the front

1. What is a Shangui charm coin?
These charm coins were never ordinary currency: they were made as tokens of blessing and protection. Shangui refers here to a mountain spirit from traditional mythology, rather than a ghost. The front carries Taoist thunder-decree and Shangui inscriptions.

2. A symbol of warding off misfortune
In traditional folk belief, the inscription represents upright, protective energy that wards off harmful influences and adversity. Carrying it is likened to keeping an unseen guardian close.

🧭 Bagua: the order of the universe on the reverse

1. The eight trigrams
At the centre is the yin-yang principle, represented in this design by a square opening, surrounded by Qian, Kun, Zhen, Xun, Kan, Li, Gen and Dui.
In feng shui, these trigrams represent eight forces of nature: heaven, earth, thunder, wind, water, fire, mountain and lake.

2. Turning fortune around
The interlocking trigrams evoke continuous renewal and the balance of yin and yang. Their traditional meaning is the hope of finding a way through difficulty and turning adversity into good fortune.

🎁 Carry it with you, wherever life leads

In the car: hang it from the rear-view mirror as a feng shui car charm and a symbol of safe, smooth journeys.

As a necklace: thread it onto a leather or thick hemp cord for a bold, contemporary Chinese look with a cyber-Taoist edge.

On a bag: attach it to a backpack for a distinctive accent of metallic texture and rainbow reflections.

Gift ideas

For male friends or elders: a strong, expressive design carrying wishes for safety and success.

For lovers of mystical traditions: Taoist inscriptions meet the intriguing craft of natural lacquer and mother-of-pearl.

For international clients: a distinctive introduction to traditional Chinese amulets and their sense of Eastern mystery.
